Neilwood Dr House

TYPE OF PROJECT: RENOVATION AND ADDITION

LOCATION: NORTH BETHESDA, MD

When presented with the challenge of transforming the client's suburban split house into a mid-century haven for their expanding family, RT Studio embraced the opportunity with a distinctive design approach. Our goal was not just a renovation, but a meticulous surgical procedure to preserve the essence of the existing structure while infusing it with the mid-century charm the client envisioned.

The cornerstone of our transformation involved the strategic addition of a new wing atop the current house, a move that not only expanded the living space but also harmonized seamlessly with the existing architecture. In a carefully orchestrated process, we surgically removed walls to craft a more spacious master suite, catering to the comfort and needs of the growing family.

To blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living, we conceptualized and implemented an innovative indoor-outdoor area. This inviting space effortlessly opened up to the enchanting wooded backyard, creating a symbiotic relationship with nature and infusing the interior with a sense of tranquility. The design aimed to not only enhance the aesthetics but also foster a connection with the surrounding environment, aligning with the mid-century ethos of bringing the outdoors in.

Terraces became a key element in connecting the new addition with the existing home, serving as dynamic entertainment focal points during the warmer seasons. These carefully crafted outdoor spaces were designed to seamlessly integrate with the indoor living areas, creating a harmonious flow that encourages both relaxation and social engagement. The terraces, thoughtfully positioned, not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the residence but also provided versatile spaces for the family to enjoy the outdoors in comfort and style.

In essence, the transformation of the suburban split house into a mid-century gem was not just an architectural feat but a testament to RT Studio's commitment to creative problem-solving and client satisfaction. The result is a home that not only accommodates the needs of an expanding family but also stands as a timeless embodiment of mid-century design principles. The interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces, the added wing, and the meticulously designed terraces collectively contribute to a living experience that seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a residence that is both functional and aesthetically captivating.
