Barkston Ct House in Rockville, MD: mid-century modern renovation with a new sloped roof, clerestory windows, and modern panel facade at dusk

Barkston Ct House

TYPE OF WORK: RENOVATION AND ADDITION

LOCATION: ROCKVILLE, MD

This project started as a kitchen renovation. The owner, a contractor we had worked with before, reached out for help updating the kitchen of a typical suburban house.

As we studied the house, it became clear the kitchen wasn’t the real problem — the space had never been brought to its potential. And the owner had a bigger dream: a mid-century modern home.

So the scope grew. An addition gives the new kitchen and living spaces the room they needed, opening onto a new deck that carries everyday life out into the backyard. A new roof — a single, low-sloped plane with deep overhangs — ties old and new together and gives the house a strong mid-century silhouette, with clerestory windows pulling daylight deep inside.

The facade was recomposed as a quiet arrangement of dark panels, black-framed glass, and warm cedar soffits — modern but welcoming, confident without being loud. At dusk the clerestories glow beneath the wood overhang, and the house finally looks like the mid-century home the owner had always imagined.
